Year 5

Welcome to Year 5.

This is an exciting year, the beginning of Key Stage 2 for Year 5. This is the year when Year 5 children really start to become independent learners; using and developing all the skills they've been taught in previous years.

Children will be expected to become more responsible for getting themselves organised for school and take ownership of their learning.

Literacy

Most Year 5 pupils are already independent readers but all children benefit greatly from being encouraged to read and discussing books with an adult to help them.

In Year 5 being engaged in the Accelerated Reader Programme is so important. It greatly helps children's comprehension skills. We get Accelerated Reading time everyday where children are able to take quizzes on what they have read and change their books. Children should be reading their reading book and Accelerated reading book at home every night.

Numeracy

This term we will cover the areas of addition, subtraction, 2D shape, symmetry and data handling. We will be also focusing on becoming more confident with Times Tables. You can use the Times Tables Rockstars programme at home to help.

World Around Us

This term our topic is Reach for the Stars. This topic has two strong defining elements one from Worlld Around Us, based on a typical study of space and a connected element from PDMU based on positive role models and the notion of fame and celebrity in the world today. It is within the PDMU section of the theme that the children also explore their aspirations and personal targets.

PE

On Tuesday we have Swimming and on a Friday we have Gaelic coaching at school.  Please bring appropriate kit on these days.

Music

Music/tin whistle classes every Thursday with Mr Cutliffe.

Home Learning

Home learning will be given out on Mondays including spellings and mental maths. This work should be returned on Fridays
