Primary 5

Welcome to Year 5.

This is an exciting year, the beginning of Key Stage 2 for Year 5. This is the year when Year 5 children really start to become independent learners; using and developing all the skills they've been taught in previous years.

Children will be expected to become more responsible for getting themselves organised for school and take ownership of their learning.

Literacy

Most Year 5 pupils are already independent readers but all children benefit greatly from being encouraged to read and discussing books with an adult to help them. At the moment we are reading Matilda by Roald Dahl. Our grammar and creative writing tasks will be based on our reading of this book.

In Year 5 being engaged in the Accelerated Reader Programme is so important. It greatly helps children's comprehension skills. We get Accelerated Reading time everyday and children should be reading their book at home every night.

Numeracy

This term we will cover the areas of addition, subtraction, 2D shape, symmetry and data handling. We will be also focusing on becoming more confident with Times Tables. You can use the Times Tables Rockstars programme at home to help.

World Around Us

This term our topic is Mighty Me. This topic will include looking at ourselves, our local area and the human body.

PE

On Wednesday we have gaelic coaching at school and swimming at Foyle Arena on Tuesdays. Please bring the appropriate P.E. kit on these days
