Year 5/6

Welcome to Year 5/6.

This is an exciting year, the beginning of Key Stage 2 for Year 5 and the second year of KS2 for Year 6. This is the year when year 5 children really start to become independent learners; using and developing all the skills they've been taught in previous years. It is also a very important year for Year 6 as they are building on all their knowledge from Year 5 and starting to prepare for transitioning from primary school to grammar/secondary school.

Children will be expected to become more responsible for getting themselves organised for school and take ownership of their learning.

We have a very busy timetable:

Tuesday: P5 swimming at Foyle Arena.

Wednesday: PE

Thursday: P6 Swimming at Foyle Arena.

Thursday : Music with Mr.Cutliffe.

In Year 5 children will be learning the times tables up to 12X12. This needs a lot of practising at home, every night if possible.

In Year 6 children should know all of their times tables but this doesn't mean that they don't need to practice. We test the children's time tables each week so it is important to always keep practicing.

Most Year 5 pupils are already independent readers but all children benefit greatly from being encouraged to read and discussing books with an adult to help them. At the moment we are reading The Demon Headmaster by Gillian Cross and Year 6 are reading Street Child by Berlie Doherty.

In Year 5 and Year 6 being engaged in the Accelerated Reader Programme is so important. It greatly helps children's comprehension skills. We get Accelerated Reading time everyday and children should be reading their book at home every night.

Watch this space to find out what we have been doing in Year 5 and Year 6!
